In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is no longer optional but essential for technical content creators, such as STEM Professionals and Academics. Whether you’re looking to share your research, connect with peers, or showcase your work to a broader audience, a well-crafted personal website that utilizes effective technologies necessary for this sort of application can serve as a powerful platform to achieve these goals and maintain control of intellectual property (IP).

I’ve put together a non-exhaustive discussion of why having a professional website is appropriate and the process of building and maintaining one using the Hugo Blox template—a robust and flexible tool designed specifically for academics and technical experts. We will explore the challenges facing the geosciences and other STEM fields in an increasingly remote and hybrid work environment, and how a personal website can help you navigate these changes. What was once considered a so-called “soft skill” of such professionals is now a critical component of career development and professional success. Thankfully, if accomplished using the right tools and strategies, building a personal website can, ironically, also make the real work easier and more efficient. You also shouldn’t have to juggle the demands of your chosen career with the complexities of web development simply to have a professional website; Hugo Blox is designed to make this process as straightforward as possible.

We’ll touch on the rise of the gig economy and how it intersects with the technical world of both industrial and Academic STEM, highlighting the importance of a strong digital footprint in this new landscape. You’ll consider the critical role social media plays in STEM outreach, the importance of the oft-ignored topic of open-source licensing, and why the traditional resume is being replaced by a dynamic online presence. Having a website that can effectively communicate your experience and disseminate your work is advantageous in a competitive job market and can also serve as a valuable resource for potential collaborators, students, and other professionals in your field.

The technical aspects of building your site will be covered in detail, including the use of Git, Markdown, LaTeX, and various content creation tools like Pandoc. We’ll also discuss how to enhance your site’s functionality with embedded multimedia content, interactive elements, and advanced analytics, all while ensuring your content is secure and accessible only to those you choose.

Finally, we’ll look at ways to monetize your site, secure financial support, and leverage resources like the GitHub Education and Netlify’s Open Source Plan to keep your site running smoothly. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting your academic journey, this discussion will provide you with effective tools and strategies to build a successful online presence that reflects your expertise and accomplishments.
